Elm Chinese Officials Hat Chair From Shanxi - 19thC Small Mirrors loosely draped over a dressThese antique Chinese chairs were known as officials hat chairs because the shape of the back was reminiscent of an officials hat. They were often made in pairs for a husband and wife. They are usually made from elm or red elm, but examples made in walnut is also found in North China. This particular chair was originally lacquered with a burgundy lacquer which has since mostly worn away. They were made in pairs and it is very rare to find larger sets
