The American Boy dates from Byrnes celebrated early 1990s printmaking period, when he produced a small number of highly personal, allegorical works in tightly controlled editions. The image combines a childlike figure, a stylised animal companion and an American flag motif, rendered in Byrnes distinctive linear style and finished with hand applied
