Moses had recently received these tablets from God on Mount Sinai, only to come down from the mountain and see his people worshiping a golden calf. Upset by the Jews' idolatry, Moses broke the tablets in a moment of anger, which is what we see here emphasized with a bolt of lightning, in this black and white image by G. Dore. Usage
